Working principle of anion exchange resin
Anion exchange resin is a kind of polymer with base groups that can remove anions in solution through ion exchange reaction.
The core principle is that the anions on the resin (OH⁻ or Cl⁻) undergo a replacement reaction with the target anion in the solution, which achieve selective adsorption and separation
1. Basic exchange reaction
The functional groups of the anion exchange resin (such as quaternary ammonium groups, amine groups, etc.) dissociate the OH⁻ ions in water and exchange them with the anions in the solution ( Cl⁻, SO₄²⁻, etc.).
2. Resin classification and characteristics
According to the different basic groups, anion exchange resins are divided into two categories:
Strong base resin: contains -N⁺(CH₃)₃OH⁻, which can work within PH1-14, can exchange with all anions, and needs to be regenerated with strong base ( NaOH).
Weak base resin: contains -NH₂, -NHR, etc., which can work within PH 1-9. Na₂CO₃ or NH₄OH can be used for regeneration.
3. Dynamic processes and influencing factors
Adsorption and diffusion: The anions in the solution diffuse to the surface of the resin due to the concentration difference and potential difference, and bind to functional groups.
Regeneration: Saturated resin eluates adsorbed ions through strong acids ( HCl) or strong bases ( NaOH) to regain exchange capacity.
Application field
Water treatment: Remove harmful anions (cyanide, thiocyanate), seawater desalination and ultra-pure water preparation
Industrial separation: Extract rare elements or separate organic acids (such as citric acid, tartaric acid).
